Easy Owl Costume

Easy owl costume

this easy owl costume is also free if you have a couple of old white shirts and a little piece or orange or yellow for the beak and a few markers.  I used black for the eyes on the hat and gray for the lines on some of the feathers.

1- just cut the collar off of the shirt

2- cut the front off by cutting along the yoke and straight down the top of the sleeve20151023_154848.

3- cut the bottom 1/4 of the sleeve off a few inches above the placket.

4- make a pattern of cardboard for your feathers.

5-cut around the bottom of the shirt so it is shaped as the feathers using the pattern you made. Also cut the feather shape on the edges of the sleeves.

6- using the front of the shirt including the placket with buttons and with buttonholes together lay the plackets on top of each other and use the pattern to cut the shape of feathers on it making two long strips of feathers.  Do the same on the second shirt front and then cut 2 similar strips of feathers using the back of the extra white shirt.

7- draw random feather lines with a gray maker on the feathers.  I left most of them white.

8- now sew the strips on the back of the shirr and you have it!20151023_164658 along with a squeeling happy owl fan!

9-Now the hat.  I just cut off a section of the sleeve.  Turned it wrongside out and folded it in half and cut the shape of the points on the top so they would be alike.  Sew that seam. Turn it right side out.20151023_173810-1

10- cut two triangles of orange fabric and one more of a stiff fabric of interfacing and sandwich them together and sew and turn.

11- Now just slip it under the center of the front side of the hat and sew it on.

12- Draw the eyes with a black marker.  Remember to leave a little white in the pupil and I choose to give it eyelashes.I just used the cap of a pill bottle for the pattern for the eyes.  Grandmas always have those you know!

13-draw feathers along the top with the gray marker.

More happy squeals from your little Halloween owl fan!  Have fun.  It took me less than 2 hours to complete this project.

Valentine For Him

This valentine is sharp and masculine yet fast and easy to make. Just use some scrap paper and go with it.  I used two pieces of black and white print. This card is made from and 8 1/2 by 11″ piece of red folded in half. Valentine for Him

The writing is with a gold pen and the little heart on the strip is rhinestones to give it a bling. the hearts are mounted with foam tape to make them stand out and the arrow is also mounted with foam tape on top of the heart and a double thick strip under the arrow on each end.  It gives it an added dimension.   I cut the strip in the shape of an arrow then backed the whole card with a piece of black card-stock to give it an extra border.  I find that little trick usually adds something special for the eye.

He is going to love this card with a special poem or love note inside.

Doodle Hearts Valentine Card

This is one of my favorite valentines and was so much fun to make.   I saw a picture of a similar valentine but did not have the paper that I needed to look right so I cut some plain hearts of white and red paper and doodled designs on them.  I am sure you can pick out which ones are the doodled hearts. I didn’t have the paper I wanted  so I cut some plain hearts of white and red paper and doodled designs on them. Doodle Hearts Valentinethe  hearts measure almost 1 3/4 inches from to bottom and the card is 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches (a quarter sheet size. then trim it down 1/4 inch on each side and place it on red card-stock which measures 8 1/2″ by 5 1/2 ”

I wrote the words also but if you have a nice stamp you could use it.  You might say that this card is very much “handmade”.

Reverse Heart Valentine

This reverse heart valentine is a trick and treat for the eye. Enjoy

Reverse Heart Valentinethis Reverse heart valentine really caught my eye as it did some tricks on it but quickly you  will see the hearts in the design.  It was fun and easy to make with no particular tools but a pair of scissors and glue plus some shiny red paper that actually came from a book of Christmas papers.

the first thing I did was cut a 2 1/2 inch square then cut out a heart the desired size to fit on

how to make Love you

The sides of these hearts or half hearts are 1 1/2 inches high.  Then I just traced around half the heart centering it on the edge of each side of the square.

valentine pics 015Not I just cut out the half heart on each edge.  Here you can see what it looked like with the pattern heart laid on it before I traced it.  After it is cut our you simply paste the matching edges of the heart along the right opening.

the trick is that if your paper is two-sided you just flip the half heats over before you paste them on so they will match up.  If your paper is one sided then you need to cut two squares and half hearts.  One must be the reverse of the other or they won’t fit.  That gives you two designs for two valentines with only a little paper used.

this is not my design but my method of making it is my own.  Directions for making it with a punch are found here  http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/photo/2142408?&si=Heart%2520punch

Valentine In A Box

Valentine In A BoxValentine In A Box- I love this valentine because it has the element of surprise and it can also be a decoration as well as a valentine  greeting card.  It is not really time consuming.  There are so many different ways you could create this dimensional card.

1-Cut a piece of cardstock to measure 8 1/4″ by 9″

pictures from phone feb 4 060 next Score along the 9″ edge at 2 1/8″, 4 1/4″, 6 3/8/” and 8 1/2 ”  if you look closely you can see the score lines. pictures from phone feb 4 062 4- With the  8 1/4 inch side on top, and your 2 3/4 ” score to the left of the cardstock, cut to measure 6″.  Save the piece that is cut off.

pictures from phone feb 4 063

pictures from phone feb 4 066 5- Measure the scrap piece and cut to 3 1/8″ making sure to include the tab.  You will end up with a piece that now has a tab along each side.  Cut in half at 1 1/8 so now you have two strips, each with a tab on each end.  Fold tabs up in a Z and adhere sticky tape strip to ends and set aside. pictures from phone feb 4 067 pictures from phone feb 4 068

6- Take the main card stock so the 2 3/4″ side is at the top and cut along the small square score lines to create flaps,.  Trim off tiny strip left over, and discard it. pictures from phone feb 4 069 pictures from phone feb 4 070

Fold on the creases and use sticky strip to adhere the box together.pictures from phone feb 4 071 pictures from phone feb 4 073 pictures from phone feb 4 075

Now you can cut four panels 2″x1 5/8″  to decorate the flaps of the box with, Glue them on the flaps.

pictures from phone feb 4 076

Now bend the z stips and add the sticky tape to the flaps and stick them inside your box.  Then flatten the box and crease it to make sure your box will collapse for the envelope.pictures from phone feb 4 077

It will look like this when the strips are inside.  pictures from phone feb 4 080

pictures from phone feb 4 081 Now either cut your hearts and flowers from stamps or use a Cricut to cut the flowers and hearts as I did.  I think that saved me a lot of time.  Then I just decorated the flowers with markers and wrote “Love Ya” on a heart with a pencil our used a heart stamp on it that said “I Love You”.  then I flattened the box and stamped the little stamps, I have two of them, on the box.  or decorate it any way you wish.

Cut some strips of green for the stems and glue them on the flowers and hearts and arrange them in the box just like you would a simple floral arrangement.  I found that 7 items worked well for me.

pictures from phone feb 4 082 there you have it a nice valentine surprise for someone special.  My grandchildren will just love this. pictures from phone feb 4 088I got this idea and measurements for www.serenestamper.com  You can look there for a video.

Dad’s Stache Cookie Jar

This is just the cutest cookie jar  to store Dads Stash.  My husband loves his and it sits proudly on our counter.  Sometimes it holds his favorite cookies.  That really makes him happy. !

Clever Cookie Jar for Dad, and Valentine’s Day  coming… hint hint.

step #1 find a cute jar, one you have? thrift store?  or buy new?  I already had this jar.  Free!

step #2 cut letters with your vinyl cutter or get some stickers from the craft store.

*Here is a huge tip if you have a small machine like a cricket or silhouette?  I bet you have a friend with a huge vinyl cutter for business or pleasure.  I have several.  The scraps that they throw away because they are too small to feed into the machine…. Those are extremely valuable to you.  Offer them a little change for their scraps.  They really go a long way!!  A  friend gave me vinyl.   Free!

step #3 fill it with his favorite treat.  His favorite cookie….  Oatmeal Raisin.  Easy.

Kid’s Valentine Party

Kids Valentine Party (2)

A kids valentine party is so much fun for everyone involved. Years ago I developed a “grama School”. It took three little granddaughters twice a week for two hours and had a little pre-school my style. We sung songs, worked on the alphabet and had scripture videos and coloring and did crafts and make treats, We took some “field trips too” We just did the fun things that a mom might also do with her children. Sometimes the brothers got to come when they were out of school. This tradition went on for years with different children. We all loved it. Those times remain brightly in our memories because I scrapbooked every day. It was quick and easy scrapbooking but the book was copied for each of the girls and the books are priceless. I will share some ideas from these books in the future. Today we will be getting ready for Valentine’s day. This was our focus for three different days.

valentines 009

the first thing we did was to make valentines for their Daddys.  I just found pictures on the internet for them to color and then mounted them on red cardstock.  They were so happy with them.

valentines 010

then we danced and had valentine cupcakes.  Children love to dance and eat 🙂

valentines 012

Next we made hats from paper plates.  I just punched holes in the top.  ONe on each side to thread a piece of stretch trim to tie under their chins.  It was a bit scratchy so I would recommend something softer.  A plain ribbon would work.  The ribbon at the top of the page is the same that we used for the bow on the hats.

valentines 013

on Valentine’s Day, we had treats and they received little teddy bears and candy jewelry and wore their hats.  As you might notice, one little girl is missing because she was very sick that day.  She still got her gifts and loved her hat and all the preparations. the base of this picture is actually one of the napkins from the party.the bear on this page was cut from a  paper plate like we used for the hats. There you have it!  A terrific fun way to celebrate Valentine’s day with kids.  Boys can make hats too.  You could use half a hat and curve the inside to fit on him like the brim of a cap.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!! DON’T FORGET TO SCRAPBOOK IT!  If I had not done that there would not be as strong of ties and memories with the children.

Measuring Tape Bow

tape measure box

It is pretty simple to just take a measuring tape and shape it into a bow, tape it together and add it to your package.  You might find other things around that house to make attractive bows out of like yarn, string, ric rac, strips of paper, belts or scarves.  create bow out of magazine pages and wrapping paper.  Just be creative and match your gift wrapping to the lucky reciever!

Here is a tutorial on creating your own bow out of magazine pages.

Shirt & Tie Wrap

Shirt & Tie Wrap DIY

Shirt and tie wrap! This just might be the most admired package under your tree.

First I found an old shirt My husband no longer wanted or else I bought it at the thrift store.

Found an old die also to use.

December things 003

Next put the box with the present in side it.  inside of the shirt and then trim away the extra fabric so you can size up the box and shirt together.  Just make sure you leave enough room for seams.  then take it off of the box and sew up the ends and the sides of the box.

Then put the present inside by opening it in the front with the buttons.  Of course, that is simple.  then you can use your needle and thread to take up any extra and see how the sew a piece on the corners up so that the shirt takes on a box shape.  You can get the idea from a folded  paper sack.  You might even just wrap the package with paper and not tape it.  Put creases where needed and follow that as your pattern.  Wish I had thought of that while I was doing it.  🙂

December things 004

Now do some stitching to make it fit snugly and there you have it.  a box that looks like a shirt.  It can be a dead giveaway for what is inside or you can put a complete surprise inside.  Either way, it is a bunch of fun.

December things 008

Finally add the tie to it as you see above.  I also used a tie pin without the back on it.  I just stuck it through the tie and the box and it stayed in place.

Happy wrapping.
